This First Year studio was about exploring materials – their qualities, how you manipulate them, and what their limitations are. We began by casting a material of our choice. I chose wax and it was interesting to see it contract and pull away from the mould. This shrinkage resulted in a form that was imperfect, with rounded corners and a dip in one side that needed to be filled. We also explored wood, plastic and metal. Overall my favourite was my metal model. It was made from a single piece of tin that was cut and folded so that the metal was constantly in tension.
